This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after complete review of the EDRP application. To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Degree of doctor of dental surgery or dental medicine resulting from a course of education in dentistry. The degree must have been obtained from a United States or Canadian school of dentistry listed by the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA), in the list published for the year in which the course of study was completed or from a school (including foreign schools) accepted by the licensing body of a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico), or the District of Columbia as qualifying for full and unrestricted licensure provided the licensure requirements include a written examination measuring science achievement and a performance examination measuring clinical competence. Completion of an approved residency program in general practice or specialty, or comparable experience as a dentist actively involved in treating medically compromised patients. Current, full and unrestricted license to practice dentistry in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. The dentist must maintain current registration in the State of licensure if this is a requirement for continuing active, current licensure. Proficiency in spoken and written English. Preferred Experience: 1 year of experience and one-year Advanced Education in General Dentistry (AEGD) preferred. Physical Requirements: Light lifting (under 15 lbs.), light carrying (under 15 lbs.), use of fingers, walking 4-8 hours, standing 4-8 hours, near vision correctable at 13" to 16" to Jaeger 1 to 4, far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20 in the other, hearing (aid permitted), working closely with others, working alone, emotional and mental stability. Duties include: - Excellent communication skills, ability to work with dental assistants nurses, dental hygienists, therapists and lab technicians, treating a range of patients with chronic conditions. - Perform examinations through observation and use of dental equipment and tools. - Information technology skills, computer, outlook, with ability be able to interpret radiographs x-rays. - Must be able to look for needed repairs, immediate and future needs of the patient by examining for caries, fractures, acute/chronic infections, gingivitis, and periodontitis, small cracks, diseases of the gums, level of plaque. - Must be able to treat patients not only as an outpatient, inpatient, as well as the Community Living Center, with interest in the welfare of others and a sympathetic manner, especially patients with fear and anxieties. - Treatment will be for patients with chronic and co-morbid conditions - Understanding of Dental eligibility criteria and establishing Scope of Care. - Carry out agreed clinical treatments such as restoring teeth affected by decay and treating gum disease. - Accurate completion of encounter for services provided in the electronic health record. - Ensuring equipment is restocked and tools are in good repair. - Manual dexterity and technical dental skills, with the ability to maintain intense concentration for prolonged periods. - Compliance with all JC standards, VA Dental directives, MCM, and guidelines are in place with timely updates as required, to include eligibility criteria.
